About
Stylishly simple yet deeply meaningful, Frances Smith's ceramic ware combines functionality with artistic expression.
"I use the finest Australian porcelain, adorning its pure white surface with hand-drawn illustrations—often depicting threatened and endangered species or the natural world around me."
Frances primarily works with porcelain, decorating it with elegantly simple black line work. She also incorporates bold underglaze colors in a woodcut style, further enhancing her pieces with gold lustre in a third firing.
Her larger sculptural works, often wheel-thrown and altered in shape, feature intricate incised reliefs that add depth and texture.
Frances also creates refined, traditional ceramic forms, showcasing the beauty of classic glazes such as celadon and chun as well as her own studio glazes.
